Planning and Styleguide

Hi, my name is Jasmina Softic and I’m the lead artistfor the android game Crittercal Care (Working title). In the game you raise a small animal a critter so to say and you take care of it and watch it evolve, the game is also .

Me role as the lead artist means that I have to lead the other artists in our team, unfortunately we’re only two graphics students including me which means that we are quite understaffed. Well for this week the main thing we did was to plan and set as much as possible in stone as we could.

The original concept we had for the game was to have it in 2d with some charming sprites, but because the critter is supposed to evolve we would need variations and we wanted the sprites to look unique, but once we had created an asset list we quickly realized that we would have too much to do because we ended up with almost 100 unique animations and for the size of our team and considering the time constrain it was just not feasible. We were also later informed about the fact that a 2d game would most likely take up too much space for the device we decided on as sprite sheets tend to make the application bigger

Thus we decided to take it into a different direction, we went with 3d, this way we could use the same rig on most of the critters and thus reuse the animations reducing our work load. Ironically the main reason I joined this team was because I was promised that it would be in 2d, alas we all have to compromise for the sake of the project from time to time and this was just one of those cases.

After we settled on this it was time for me to start cracking and work up a style guide, a guide which would contain the most vital information about our in game assets, like how to use the colours, what texture type to use, the polycount for the critters, animation references etc. Although this document will most likely be subjected to change as we progress through the project it’s still a start!

I’ll level with you guys the document took longer to create than it should have as the week was riddled with technical issues for me, my laptop broke down, my replacement computer would download the softwares I use etc. which forced me to use some “creative” solutions which were quite tedious, like using a text to image service online, saving that and pasting it in the styleguide and then make some adjustments in order to remove the background and such.
