About Scrum

Hi my name is Lee and I am the project manager for the group Fenrir. For this post I am going to write about the method the group used to organize the project. “The Scrum”.

Scrum is an agile method for small teams. In the scrum, you would first decide the product backlog. It is breaking the project into big chunks. After that you break down the chunks again into smaller chunks which are sprints. Scrum is supposed to be iterative. Which means the team should work on a sprint for certain amount of time they have chosen. After they are done with the sprint, they would choose another sprint and work on it for same amount of time.

As we first started the project, we were given a specific scrum design to work on. It was on spreadsheets. At first I had no idea what to do. Although I had a vague knowledge of what the scrum was by reading books, I did not know how to implement it in real form. Hence, our scrum sheet looked really a mess in the first place. In fact, I even missed the product backlog and only had sprints. When I finally got the product backlog, the specific data of sprints became problem. For instance, it was hard to name the assets. We went through many trials for this. Sometimes the assets were too specified and other times they were too broad. Moreover, both sprint planning and sprint review were not done at all. Luckly our group got a scrum master who could see and give feedbacks on the scrum. Our group met the scrum master at least two times a week. Normally we would meet him on Monday and choose the sprint that the team would work on this week in other words, did the sprint planning. On Friday we would meet him again and do the sprint review. Other than that I would set up a meeting so that the whole team member could sit down and work together. That way it was easier to see how the work was processing. If the meeting was unavailable, we did a simple stand up in our slack channel.

scrumAfter a week I could grasp how scrum was working and what I should do as a project manager in the team. Now I am constantly checking and updating the scrum if there are any changes with it.
