Week 5 – potato drop

Hello!

This week I have been working on an animation. The animation is a box that is dropped from our player plane avatar, the box falls a short disctance and then opens its parachute. The reason why we put this animation in our game is because we needed more feedback so that the player better understands that she is delivering potatoes in our game.

I made this animation using frame to frame animation in Photoshop.
I started with creating a box in the right size. I copied one of the boxes on our plane, because it already has two, and created some new line art for it.
I then went and copied this box several times and I made it smaller for each frame. When I had done that I noticed that, whilst it is getting smaller, it is does not really look like it is falling downwards, so I covered every layer of box in a low opacity dark blue (since it is night in our game) and made the box darker the further down it went, applying about 5% extra dark blue with every frame.
I then went on making the parachute. This was a tricky one, making a parachute look like a parachute from straight above is not as simple as it sounds. So after several tries I finally got a decent one that didn’t look just like a flat circle. I then followed the same routine and I made it smaller and smaller whilst applying more and more dark blue. But the difference in the parachute is that it is animated in almost double the number of frames, because I really wanted it too look like it had slowed down. I have also applied some swinging to it as well to make it a bit more realistic and understandable. I also want to mention that I added the entire parachute in one frame, but I think this is looks accepteble because I added a small particle effect that justifies it. The particle effect is just two frames of animation of some lines going out from the parachute as soon as it opens, and I am pleased with that result as well.

Here below me is the gif of my animation, I do not now if it is visible for you or not, but on one of the frames after the parachute has opened and directly after the particle effects there is a lot of white, I do not now where this came from nor is it in my Photosop file, but if this s actually visible in the game then I do not know how to fix it, because I do not know what is causing it. So if you have experienced anything similar please tell me what it is.
