Back to the ground

Team BunnyIP has chosen the game “Selfish.”  This game exists in a fish tank and revolves around a protagonist that is going to save-the-day.  This protagonist happens to be a fish named Stephen.  The big boss, an octopus, hoards all of the food and has minion fish that assist in collecting the food in the fish tank.   Stephen is hungry, alone, and mad.  This has to stop!  What is a fish to do in this situation?  Get a gun.  Yes, violence is the answer in this situation.  With a gun and determination, this little fish can accomplish anything.

But, before any of this can happen we need to create art assets so Stephen can live and slaughter in our fish tank.  This aquatic battle ground needs to look like something that resemebles a fish tank.

For this I started with the bottom.  I searched around for images that look like the bottom of fish tanks.  Most of them were disappointing so I looked instead for sandy textures that I could work with.  I found something I liked and gave it some perspective to help with the depth we needed for this game.

Most fish tanks, by their very nature, have a boundry or border which means you see the bottom up against the glass.  It creates a kind of cross-section effect.  I added a dark, uneven edge to the sandy texture to attempt to achieve the same effect.

I will be adding different plants and other decorative assets that will be layered and help with the immersion.  Photoshop has many fantastic brushes for different shapes and textures.  One of them is a grass texture.  Using two different colors that are close to each other, you can achieve a varied effect of grass  I created a layer with this grass and then duplicated it two more times for the layering effect.

Again, working with the illusion of depth I had to add more than just darker colors to the layers that were further and further away from the player.  I decided to use a blur effect to achieve this.  The “back” most layer has the strongest blur and the middle has a half as strong blur with the front having almost no blur.

Putting the sandy bottom with the three grass layer elements creates the look I was going for:

To finally round off this concept background I had to add some kind of color to the back for which everyone would be set against.  In this game the player is supposed to swim “deeper” into the fish tank as they complete each level and make their way to the octopus overlord.  To mimic the general effect of deep water I went with a gradient color that started in almost black and went up towards blue.  When you put it all together you get this:

The next challenge will be finding plants to go with the background which will help add to the ambiance of the game taking place in a fish tank.
