Blog nr. 5
Level nr. 1 Design/ Layout

So as we managed to slip though the Beta presentation and the finish line is within sight, we find ourselves staring at a mostly finished backlog. So our job as graphic designers these last weeks is to polish everything and finish the last of the menus, texts, background visuals and be ready to fix animations that might look a bit off when they are implemented in the game.
But this week i had the great fortune to find myself working with our level design, which is both really fun and exhausting. Since every change must be play tested i found that it is time consuming and taxing on ones mental well being.

The way we are doing our lay out is in a program that one of our programmers made (big ups to Adrian) as can be seen below.

The pink square is the screen that the player sees in the game. The top part is the HUD where we try not to spawn enemies since they will be hard for the player to spot.
Below is the scroll button that allows you to scroll through the level (left to right)
Below is ”Enemy one” that lets you place enemy one on the level by checking the box and then clicking on the black screen to place them.
You can toggle the enemies speed on the x – axis and the y – axis (forwards, up and down)
The same for enemy two and enemy three.

This is what the level looks like when you start placing enemies along the level. The red squares are enemy one, the blue squares are enemy two and the green ones are enemy three. This is our actual level one as it looks right now, it has been quite a lot of work figuring out how much i should space them to keep it challenging without feeling boring.
The problem is that we have spawning asteroids to which i can´t play test right now so the programmers have to play it through their code since i have an older version of the game.
Of course we will make sure that i get an updated one but it has been quite hectic lately so we haven´t gotten around to it yet.

I recon we will keep tuning and polishing the level up until the very end since it is a few more assets we want to add into the game that can change the level, and therefore also change the way we place the enemies.
But for now i am quite happy with the feel of our first level.
