A place to hide

This week, with the Alpha deadline coming up, much attention and work have been given to create objects to hide behind.

In our game we have guards and cameras that will detect you if you cross their line of sight (will be shown by a coloured cone, moving back and forth from the enemy). In order to escape you must either stealth past them or kill them. A big part of our stealth gameplay is to hide behind corners and things, waiting for the enemy to look another way, and then sneak past.

Therefore it is essential to our gameplay that the level have places to hide. Our first level will be located in the personnel’s area in an airport. There will be some different rooms as cafeteria, locker room and lavatories. These rooms all offer different possibilities for the player to hide, such as vending machines, toilet stalls and lockers.

This is the things I’ve made this week and how I did it:

Big plants – I’ve made some big bushy plants to place in, for example, the cafeteria. They are quite high witch make them hide the character from enemies. Since the bush is kind of small, the depth and width is 64×64 px, there was no room to make leafs and stuff, they would be too small. Instead I used different shades of green to give the bush an illusion of leafs and depth.

Glass wall – Instead of doing windows to put on the walls I decided to make a glass wall. I did this because it fits better with the location of the game; an airport where there usually are entire walls with just windows. To make the wall look like glass I made it a lot thinner than the other walls. I also gave it a low transparency and a light blue colour. “Glass is not blue” you may say. But when depicted it is usually given a bluish hue. I think we use blue for glass because when we see it in real life it is often reflecting the blue sky. I felt like I had to do the glass a bit blue for it to be visible, I also didn’t make it completely see-through all to make sure it wasn’t mistaken for some weird wall.

Lockers – For the locker-room I decided to make groups of lockers instead of individual lockers. Lockers are like sheep, usually in big hordes. I made one version with two columns of closed lockers then I copied it and made one of the lockers open. Then I made the front column (open and closed) alone to be able to put it against the wall. I also made one line with the backsides of lockers, just in case. Then I thought about the possibility to have something in the open locker. So I made a simple tile with something orange (cloth perhaps) that you can put on a layer above the locker to make it look like it is inside.

Ps. If you’ve read my previous post, you will notice that we decided to make the objects in our fake-isometric- perspective.
