The End of The Start Button

This post will take us through the incredible journey of drawing a cancelled asset.

So when last week we decided on some parts that we need to include into our game, since the play testing and the gruesome alpha version deadline is coming, the seemingly „small” part i got, was drawing the buttons. Yes, the little things you click in the menu or after losing to get into the game or quit it. I was really one of those people who thought of it as a little side-job and overall a simple task.

For some reason, this week i got surprisingly ambitious and decided that i don’t want to just make some plain, boring buttons. Since our game was decided to be held in a kind of steampunky style, I was inspired. The idea was there: let’s make some really cool, standing out menu. I spent the first hour watching pictures and other references to settle down on a single idea for a steampunky looking buttons. I switched all the way from metallic buttons held by screws, to gears-based circles with text and finally to a maze of steampipes connected with different, massive gears. Now came the time to work, but it’s already a bit late and i want to have it done for tomorrow, so no time to rest.

After a lot of drawing, erasing, drawing it differently, erasing and finally settling down on an idea, i spend another huge part of my evening doing what you can see above. I sure was tired, but it didn’t matter at the time, since i was more hyped than anything else. I quickly shared this very picture on our slack group and asked for opinions before i continue working on it and linking it to other buttons. That’s when i received the depressing news: we aren’t going to use buttons to start the game, at least for now. We have another idea for it.

I’m just glad i had some nice food at house to focus on, otherwise I’m pretty sure i would just explode.

„The buttons look good tho hah” – Words of pure bliss coming from my teammate
