#6 – Making various graphical assets

This might have been the most fun part with developing our game. Even if everything mentioned before also has been fun to do, they had a higher risk of not being able to be finished than the upcoming graphical assets have. They are very easy to do, and when they all get done very quickly I get this feeling that I have been very efficient at work. Since most of these assets will not be seen up close I also don’t need to put so much detail into them. Well, now they will be seen up close when I show them to you.

Sword: The pirates will use swords in combat, and there are swords of different sizes in my stack of reference material. But since the sword will be seen from very far away I chose to make the wider variant. According to the reference material, the angle of the blade and shaft is different to what I need to do in order to make it match with the animation that the pirate perform when swinging the sword. But all I need to do is rotate the blade and it is fixed.

Barrel: Barrels will be used to make things explode by throwing them at stuff and people. The most distinct way of showing that the barrels are explosive when the game is seen from above would be to replace the barrels with bombs. But we wanted the barrels, so the main dilemma is to make the barrels look explosive. In order to do that I put a big fuse on it and made it red to give the player a sense of danger.

Wheel: The wheel will actually be seen upfront in the start of the game, so here I might have to put a little more effort in making the graphical asset. But I also feel that it is important to not overdo the details cause that might cause a bit of an unwanted contrast to the rest of the graphical assets made so far.

Cannon: We are also going to have cannons in the game, and I’m lucky to have made a decent looking 3d cannon in the past. That means that I will save a lot of time on not just white boxing the cannons, but also on making the final design for them. I strived to reuse as much as possible of my graphical assets to make the development of our game an easier task for all of us in the group.
