#5 – Animating the character
|
Animating a character takes a lot of time while the number of graphic artists in the group is short and the amount of time we have is short as well. But we were actually able to make it in time while also being able to tweak the (amount of) animations as much as we wanted with the help of a site called Mixamo.com. Mixamo both rigs our character and has a wide range of different animations that we are allowed to use for our game. The animations works for now but if we want to continue developing our game further I would actually want to fix a lot of the rigging that Mixamo can’t handle. One of the many reasons is that Mixamo doesn’t know how to handle the pirate’s glorious beard (seen in the picture below). Pretty much every little problem we have with Mixamo is problems like the one in the picture.
That problem is a fine example of the hardest part with Mixamo. Since the site is rigging the character for you without you having the say of anything other than redo the process, you don’t get to tweak it as much as you want to or need to do. So if anything goes wrong, you can’t really do much about it. The only animation that are planned to exist in the game will be for the pirates. The rest of the graphical assets that will move will be pirate ships and cannon balls but they will move by code and I’m not in charge of creating that. Martin Månsson – Lag Anda |
