The Runes of Kalevala – Developer’s blog

Tasteful Games, the startup that I’ve been a part of for a year now is finally ready to begin work on a project we’re actually looking to bring to market. Being students we’ve had the privilege of slowly learning our craft and testing the waters for 2 years before going at it for real. The game we’re making is called The Runes of Kalevala and as Lead- and Audio Designer I’ll be talking about the game in general as well as the sound work from now until release. For now I’ll start by talking a bit about the game itself. The Runes of Kalevala is a 2D side-scrolling, cooperative RPG, that lets players experience the Finnish national epic the Kalevala in gameplay form. Players take on the roles of the epic’s legendary heroes and perform their deeds together. We are inspired by old D&D based cooperative console games like Baldur’s Gate for the Playstation 2. We felt that there’s too few opportunities today for RPG-lovers to play together locally. The game is not an homage however, but an evolution of that formula. Players can experience the tale of the Kalevala, explore the fantastical worlds of Finnish mythology and take on the challenges of these worlds as they like. All challenges in the game will offer players a way to fight or think their way out of the situation. In line with Tasteful Games’ philosophy of making games that bring people together The Runes of Kalevala has a strong local co-op component. The game is very playable as a single player experience but will offer much more when you have friends to play with. Different characters offer various capabilities that combine to create tactical possibilities and they also respond emotionally to their world and each other in various ways. We are attempting to create personality in our player characters by utilizing subtle animations and voice work to relay their feelings without the usual expository cutscenes. The game is planned as a 4-player local co-op game, although our initial vertical slice will only have 2-player support while we’re working out the kinks with 4 player split screen/wi-fi local connectivity. Our target platforms are the 3DS and WiiU primarily with other current-gen consoles close 2nd. As we’re developing on PC using Unity a PC version comes naturally. I’ll leave you with a short piece of music I made for the 1st week release, a gentle track inspired by Finnish kantele players. I know, I’m a terrible blogger, maybe I’m too old to get into the groove of putting my thoughts out into cyberspace every week.
