Background for main menu
|
So this week I am going to write a post about a work in progress. The background for the main menu. This project requires a bit more of the artist than the previous objects I have been working on. I have to take in account perspective and a lot more variables to make it look good. I also have to work together with the artist that makes the buttons to make sure that they fit in a suitable space. Also they have to match the colors and theme of the background. First I had to download the same brush set that our lead artist used to make the background in the main game. I did this to make sure it looks about the same when it comes to texture, and I used the same color palette as the main background. The first background I did which I pitched to the group they liked. However the lead design said that it was not what he had in mind so I have to redraw it. My design was that the wizard was sleeping on a lounger on the beach, he was thinking about the classical cartoon symbol for sleep – A log that is being sawed. Since the items in the game are being presented inside these type of thought bubbles I thought it would have been a nice to represent them here. I also wanted to add the monster, by showing his shadow towering over the wizard. Then I would have added people fleeing the beach, away from the giant monster. I would also add some items that the people had left, like towels, shovels and trampled sand castles. The problem that the lead design had was that it did not follow the design document, in the document he defends the beach and he does not sleep. I thought it would be a funny addition but he did not agree. Luckily I had not finished my original concept so I have not worked too much in vain. As I spoke to the rest of the group they seemed to like the idea that is why I went ahead and started on it. I showed it early enough in the process to avoid a situation where if I had finished it, I would have worked for nothing. So a lesson to be learned, read the design document more carefully and show your stuff early. The WIP background:
