Rune Mages – The rune icons
|
Celtic Symbols During the production of the game it occurred that runes that was going to be a huge part of the game would have to be designed, and rather sooner than later. The runes that are used in the game are heavily inspired by old Celtic symbols and I was put in charge for the design of the runes. We didn’t want to copy an existing symbol straight off so I had to do some research on what is special with the Celtic symbols. Luckily I was able to borrow a book about Celtic symbols where it was described what the essentials was and there was also a lot of examples. The three different runes that we are using represents fire, water and earth. I had some general ideas for each one of them so I looked at similar designs and narrowed them down to a single design each. Water I wanted the water rune to have a flow and look like a wave. There was a lot of good examples that I could use as inspiration. Fire The fire rune was a bit trickier because Celtic symbols have a natural flow by default and fire is often described as unpredictable. I therefor had to take another approach and went for a design much like the example in the top left since I got a bit of a fireplace feeling from it. Earth I wanted the earth rune to be big and square-like to indicate a rock. This was a bit tricky as well since it didn’t match the other two runes vary much. It became to thick. The final design became much like the the example to the right but laying down instead. Final Rune Designs
