Blogpost I – Fancy Mansion

The ”Stealable” Items

It is now the fourth week of our bigger game project where we are developing a functioning game from an existing concept.  I and my group are working on “Fancy Mansion” where the player plays as a thief, stealing things from Mr Fancy’s Mansion.

This week I have been working on designing different types of item that the player will be able to steal in the game. So far I have completed three items that I am pleased with, though some might need some retouching.

The one I am most pleased with is the armor that works as both a score giving item and a special power-up. The player can not only carry it to thearmor drop-off point but also equip it, making you more or less invisible to Mr Fancy while standing still. When I designed this item I began, as usual, to find good reference pictures since I’m not too familiar with what armor looks like in the details. I tried at first to fit in as much detail as possible just to make it look more expensive. That approach only resulted in too many wasted hours of work since I, unfortunately, had forgotten that this piece was going to be animated. Too many details would just make that part harder and longer than necessary later on.

After this setback I started from the beginning by looking after other references. This time around I chose to go for digital and traditional painted pictures of armor instead of real ones. As a wanted less detail the drawings helped me see which parts of the armor that were important and could be exaggerated in my design so that it still looked like a realistic armor.  I managed, after some tinkering, to come up with a design I liked and I drew it the same way I had the others, with relatively thin but clear lines. But I made the original pretty big and is was hard to get the lines really straight so in my frustration I increased the size of my brush and re-drew. The result gave me the look I wanted for all the items and I will have to tinker a bit with those I have already done, but at least I now know how to work with the items to come!
