At the moment of writing, we have reached the end of the second week of Introduction to Game Development.
During these weeks, me and my team have chosen a game to develop, writen a scrum plan and started working on the design document.
The Game and the team:
Me and my team chose the game “Green Warden”, a top down (faux isometric) tower defense game where the player also controls an avatar that can join in the fight. The game has a mechanic similar to Magicka’s element combination power, but used for the tower building.
The team has worked together on the concept document for the previous game design course (details on this will be in a future blog post). The team members are:
Pontus Hassis, me, studies Design and Graphics.
Flovin Michaelsen, studies Design and Programing.
Nisse Lindblom. studies Design and Graphics.
Johannes Westberg,studies Design and Programing.
Oskar Hernberg, studies Design and Programing.
Markus Holm,studies Design and Graphics.
The first thing we did after choosing the game was to read the design document, and after that start discussing how to go about the development process. We quickly came to the conclution that Nisse should be the lead Artist and Johannes lead sound, since they were the most skilled and experienced in those fields. For the first week we also left the design democratic and the production autonomous.
The Scrum and the work
The whole team gathered after class each day to start writing on the scrum and to discuss the art and game design.I researched tower defense design by myself and started looking at an artwork theme, along with the rest of the art part of the team.
On the Friday we met our scrum master, Daniel Svensson, and it became more of a social than work meeting.
On Monday morning most of the team met up with Daniel to look at the game his team made when he had this course, but sadly I overslept. I did work with them after the lesson however, where we proceed as before.
Tuesday the art part of the team gathered while the programers had a lecture. We discussed some more art design, and when the programers returned and Nisse left for a lecture, we were back to the write on the scrum and discuss some game design sort of meeting. On Wednesday we worked all out on the scrum with a goal to have it as good as finished on Thursday. Most worked on the scrum from home as well.
At Thursdays lecture we were urged to have design handled mainly by one person, so I took that responsibility. The group kept polishing the Scrum and I started writing some minor adjustments to the very basic design document we had, as well as started researching the material we had been given about design documents.
On Friday we did some final polishing before we sent the invitation to the Google document where we kept the scrum to our mentor. We also decided that Markus will be the producer for next week, and that we will have a social meeting on Friday where we all relax a bit together.
Saturday I continued research on the design document material and started writing on a much more solid version of it.
That is all for this week, next week will be reported on next sunday!
