Technically blog #4

Since I was sick during this week and forgot to write this back then I’m going to write the post now. This post will focus on group dynamics and how they affected our game development process.

Over the course of this project, our group has had some problems when it came to our group dynamics. Our group had some communication problems from the start, whether it came to scheduling meetings to having problems with members. At some point, our communication problem began to affect the development of our shoot’em up game.

In order to try and fix the situation regarding our communication, we had a group meeting where we aired out the problems we were having with each other and what we could to do to solve them. This meeting along with the meeting on non-violent communication we had with Finn did manage to help us with our problems when it came to talking with each other. And while these meeting may not have permanently solved our problems they did help us in putting aside our differences and make a decent game.

The problems with scheduling can be attributed to the ineffectiveness of Slack. We found that Slack was not a very helpful tool when it came arranging meetings or contacting members individually. There were many group meetings where not only all members were there because they had not seen or been notified of the message posted in Slack. At one point we were using three different messaging apps in order to try and make sure all members would be present. This also was not very effective. These problems lead to a lot of  wasted time when it came to development. Our artists ended up creating assets that we never used, and programmers ended having to reimplement assets multiple times.

It was towards the middle of the project that we decided to create a facebook messenger group. This ended up working much better than the other apps that we were using. There were more meetings when all group members were present which in turn lead to better sprint planning meetings!
