BGP – Day 2.1

Late night study – The one page

Last night I had to finish up some laundry and with the very slow washing machine, that took forever, I ended up doing laundry until 03:00. To not waste time I watched a GDC (Game Design Conference) presentation on One Page design documents which you can see here:

It’s about an hour long and is very much worth watching. To summarize the presentation it is about how to take the big design documents (also known as design bibles) and make them both presentable. The problem with the design bibles is that they tend to be several hundreds of pages long and most people don’t bother to read more than a page, how to solve this? Make it all fit into one page!

This can be done through drawing out a map over the world med a bunch of notes and pictures around it with arrows that show where everything is, what it is and why it is there. GDC - one page template.PNG

Here is a template that is shown in the presentation that show a example of how it could look like. But the one page design documents can take several different forms. It can be a flow chart, a matrix in Excel or even storyboards that show the progression of the game. The goal is that it should look good enough to have people hang it up on the wall, then you have really succeeded.

I presented this to the group later today and will show you what we came up with.

Until next time!
