This week I animated the boss for our game.
It’s a weak creature who hides behind its army of minions and its elemental shields.
It’s also very evil, as you can see from the way it’s rubbing its hands together.

During the boss fight the boss’ shield will switch between different elements. The player will have to survive against enemies until they get the right weapon for the right elemental shield. I have also been working on the sprites for these shields, but this week I focused mainly on the boss itself.
I’m satisfied with my result because animation is really hard and I’m just a puny programmer But it’s also a looot of fun, so I’m glad I get to do it in this project, and I will hopefully get to do more of it in my future projects as well.
If I have time next week, I will see if I can also add just a little bit of motion to the head as well. All body part are separated on their own layers. That way I can control what is on top of what, and animate them using different techniques.
The wings are animated frame-by-frame, which means it’s made out of four looping images.
The limbs are animated with skeleton animation.
With the help of a tool that is commonly called “Bone Tool”, or something similar, I can mark up bones through the limbs and then move the joints to very easily create animation.

As you can see from the way that the outlines on the leg are “bending”, you have to be very careful when settings this up to prevent the image from being misshaped when you start dragging it around.
But since I only needed a little bit of a “dangle” with very little motion, I didn’t have to worry too much about it.
I have to make sure to find suitable sound effects for the boss next week. I want it to chuckle menacingly from time to time while the player is struggling with getting through the boss’ shields, and then whelp pathetically when it finally gets hit. I want to enforce the idea of the boss being a little weakling.
