Redesigning the Power-ups

This week my team and I decided to cut some planned features, so that we instead can focus on improving the ones we have. One of the features we cut was boss battles, since they take a lot of time to “get right”. This feature cut freed up a lot of time so we thought of swapping the power-up system we had for one that was a bit more nuanced. That system is what I will be discussing below.

During one of our meetings, my team and I discussed how we were going to change the power-up, not just to make it more fun but to make it fit the game better in general, as the one we currently had felt sort of shoehorned in. The way we decided to do this, is to have the player be able to pick up pages from a book during the first level, these pages are then spent as points to unlock the power-ups (which I’m going to refer to as spells from now on) before the second level starts. After coming to that decision every one of us tried to think of a couple of different spells each, that would be fun for the player to use and that we would be able to implement within our now increasingly limited time frame. The spells we thought of were the following:

The initial list of potential spells.

After having written down all of the spells in one list, I filtered through the list; merging some of the ideas, keeping the ones that were the most frequent and removing the ones that were a bit too ambitious. That procedure resulted in the following list:

finallist
The final list.

The list above contains the spells that we should be able to implement before the end of the project. If we have enough time we might be adding another feature to the spell system, which will allow the player to choose an alternative version of a spell by spending a page, but that system is of a lower priority. However, in case that we do have time, I have already designed alternate versions for all of the spells so that we can start working on implementing those, without coders and artists having to wait for the design to get done.
