Pressure and responsibilities

Today was the deadline of the Alpha. The complete version of the minimum viable product was due today. It required our team to have completed and fulfilled each requirement that our teacher Marcus had set up for this day. Marcus had also decided that each of the 25 consisting groups in our program should present their Alpha to the rest of the students, a 10 minutes’ presentation involving 2 parts. First to discuss the concept, the positive and negative parts of the game production, provide solutions to the future and explain our goals for the next milestone. The second part of the presentation served as a gameplay demonstration of the Alpha we had created. As previously stated in my last blog, I am the project manager in our group so it was only natural that I held the presentation.

I started working on the presentation approximately three days before it was due. I made the PowerPoint first to create an overall structure of what I wanted to include in the presentation. I figured that it would be a good idea to use supportive cards with key words during the presentation. I normally rely on using cards with key words during my presentations, however I realized that I could use the titles and bullet points on the PowerPoint as key words instead. Eliminating cards and forcing me to have better contact with the audience. I had never used this method before but I thought it could work nicely since everything related to the game should be easy to talk about no matter which part you choose. I created the presentation on the first workday, then I practiced the presentation on the second day. On the third day, I presented the presentation to my group and received helpful feedback to make a few last changes. I went home and practiced even more on what I had.

Today was the presentation, the fourth and final day. I was nervous and stressed as usual. Nervous because I was presenting alone for 10 minutes in front of a crowd of nearly 120 people. Stressed since I realized that I might had preferred more time to practice when I did not use any supportive safe cards in a sense. I managed to pull my shit together and held a decent presentation after all, it is hard for myself to comment on my performance but it felt okay.  I was a bit more nervous that I would have preferred to be but I guess that simply comes with experience. This presentation was held because it had to be, it was my role and my responsibility to deliver here, and that’s what I did.

Here is a picture of the PowerPoint that I created!
