CoC Development Diary #1

Oh.

Hi there. Welcome to Crown of Creation development diary #1.

For the past few weeks the team Hippocampus has been working on the game Crown of Creation. This is a game where you play as a spider/humanoid character who is trying to conquer a crystal tree, a place full of energy.

The goal of our game is to create an exotic and challenging environment. Player will have to reach the top of the tree from the bottom while fighting varies types of enemies. The biggest challenge the player will face is shooting cost a small portion of life, so the player must calculate and be precious with their shots. The lore behind this mechanic is based on the setting of the game world. It is a world where all lives are energy based, and since you shoot energy to kill, you lose life when you shoot.

Our team composition is one design, one manager, one programmer and three artists. Since we have more artists relatively, our game would have pretty and expressive visuals. We have only programmer so we decide to make the mechanics rather simple but still keep the game as fun as possible through carefully constructed levels.

As the manager of the team, my main focus has been team building and the product backlog. Since I am still unexperienced, me and my team made the backlog together. In the beginning we only had a very basic backlog which only contains tasks up to until alpha. But we kept adding new tasks at every sprint meeting and whenever new design ideas come out. We start off a bit slow and first two sprints were not very successful as we only completed around 70% percents of what the sprints were planned for. But we are getting better. I also decided to implement Kanban for daily task tracking since it is visually easier for us to look at. Below is how our kanban board looks now:

I am also trying to experiment “crystal clear” work environment with my team because it is designed for smaller teams like us, and it encourages everyone to sit together and get instant feedback from each other. I think it is going to be working well. I will update on this matter next week.

Peace.
