This week I have been working on a concept and sprite for one of the enemies in our game. There are three kind of enemies, all that shoots differents kinds of bullets (electric, fire and ice). The theme of the game is supposed to be inspired by Hinduism in some sort of way, without stepping on anybody’s toes. That is why we have taken the more relaxed approach of “artstyles in Hinduistic countries”.
The enemy I started working on was supposed to have the power of electricity, and since the group that had created the concept document had decided that this particular enemy should be a bull I decided that it still fit to the theme of our game and proceeded to make a bull. However, since the last enemy was created to look like an elephant but with a spirit-ish body I decided to keep this theme and made a similar body for the bull.
I have drawn the bull in Photoshop, using my Wacom Intous Pro-tablet. At first I sketched around a bit trying to figure out how the bull was supposed to look like, and after figuring that out I proceeded to make the lineart. We decided to have lineart on our characters so they stand out a bit more from the background.
The colours I chose is a bit desaturated, in order to make the bull look more evil. I also stuck close to a bull’s natural colour since I thought it looked more like a bull when it was brown than if it would have been another, perphaps more electrical, colour.
The reason it got a blue stripe on it’s tail is to resemblence electricity in some way. I am also thinking about adding some sparks at the end of the tail, and making the horns look like a tesla coil with sparks flying between them. All this I would animate in order to make it look as electric as possible, but that will be if I have more time over. I will anyway make the resemblance to electricity more clear, so that the player understands what kind of enemy the bull really is.
