RIP Synapse, Hello Spark: Big Game Project Post #6
|
Our previous project, Synapse, has now fallen apart. We felt we could not continue developing it as there was so little about it that worked fundamentally. We where told by the teachers previously that it was a bad idea to pivot the project (reworking it into something else using the biggest amount of assets we had already made) and thus kept going. We finally reached the point where we simply could not go on. The project was doomed, and we decided as a group to pivot anyway, this time starting over from scratch with only 8 days left. Keep in mind that the last project had taken up about five weeks worth of time, and we are supposed to make a completely different game ready for beta testing in only a fifth of that time. And, suprisingly, we are actually managing it. In just the last three days, the the time since we started over, we have actually surpassed the point we where at with our last project. Maybe it is pure resolve, maybe it was just poor design on our part with the first project. Regardless, I am quite excited. Ahem, right. My work this week. Since we started over on the project, all my previous work has now gone out the window, but I still have quite a bit to show. Our new project is called Spark, and is about a knight named Hope that battles creatures of darkness in a 2D platformer. While all the assets of the previous project are now scrapped, we decided to stick with the theme of disease. In this case, it is mostly an allegory for fighting depression. Now that you know that, here is my work.
Starting with some textures as you can see above, I basically transformed some higher resolution images by downscaling them so they become pixelated, and then altering the edges so that they can loop seamlessly in any direction. I know they might look kind of awful here, as I have upscaled them for the sake of clarity, but they work great at their original size. The materials are, in order: Asphalt, dirt, marble and stone (a stone wall in this case). Besides that, I have designed some decorations for the level as can be seen below.
These assets include lamp posts, pillars, archways and vehicles. That is about all I have to show right now. Let us see what the future holds in store. |
