Revised Death Animation-Week 6

Last week (or wat it the week before, I can’t really recall) we decided to redo our player avatar, the Hovercraft. In so doing I remade most animations for it, except the death animation, so that is what I chiefly focused on this week.

I could I have used the old one and just  put it ontop of our new Hovercraft, but since I do not seem to have the gift of foresight I had not put the old Hovercraft on a seperate layer. So I set out to redo the entire thing. I thought I would stick with the same concept; a series of explosions on the hull. Last time I did them in a diamond shape, this time I wanted to do something more rounded (although an element of the diamond shape can still be seen). I picked a brush size of 4 or 5 and put down a splotch of white to serve as the centre of the whole thing. I then added layers of different colours (yellow, orange and red) around it to get a template. I then took the whole thing into GraphicsGale to animate it. I used less frames than the old animation and the hull ended up being covered by 4 explosions.

Left: The new animation, Right: The old animation (wonkiness due to compiling in SpriteSheet packer)

After the animation was wrapped up it was decided that we should add a bigger explosion over the entire sprite as a grande finale. This was to be its own sprite (64×64). It did not take long to make, I just made a small explosion, upscaled it, smoothed it out and made a quick animation of it expanding and evaporating. The animation is really just adding and removing layers in a certain sequence. It is supposed to trigger sometime in the middle of the death animation on the Hovercraft sprite.

The Big Bada-boom, again some wonkiness due to software

With this I am confident we have everything we need to complete the Hovercraft, the ball has firmly been planted in the programmers court to make it shine and when it does it is going to be magnificent. Most of our other assets are finished as well, I suppose I have to do some refurbishing next week. Although I am happy to anything except explosions. They are fantastic don’t get me wrong, but after a while it can become rather tiresome.
