Gameplay Theme Song
|
For this week I have created a theme song for our game. When I first started the game I had a sort of vision for how the theme song would incorporate with the rest of the sound effects. In the beginning of our development we had some sounds for shooting that imitated an artillery firing shot. My idea was to have the sound effects of the game, like explosions and shots to mixture well with the main theme. Putting them in same genre I suppose you could say. Like in pixelart games they usually have the 8-bit sound. Back in the day this was of course because of a restriction of sorts, but created the genre affiliated with that kind of art. The art in our game did not to appeal to any specific genre in my opinion, so had a bit of free hands to choose which kind of sound effects and music I wanted. Initially I started out with my previous inspirations when it came to space themed music. Brian Eno was again a clear choice to take influences from. Now my idea of how the music would work together with the sound effects was based on every sound effect sort of being a part of a piano. The main theme served as a base and building pillar for the other sound effects. In this way the game would kind of create it’s own melody with the shots and combos. Here’s an illustration of how it would work:
I imagined the whole thing as a sort of music box, if you remember those. Having these effects working as tones that create a sort of melody, meant that I didnt want to have any real rhythm in the main theme song. I wanted it to be a more like a flow or wave. There wouldn’t be a steady rhythm coming from the effects, since the player would be shooting at his/her own will and own pace. Therefore the gameplay music did not become anything hectic or stressful, which could have been an option, since our game can be quite stressful. As before I used the program called Reason by Propellerheads. I like using this program since their synths are very flexible and relatively easy to use. They have a good selection of pads and soundscape effects that I used for the theme, to have the atmospheric feel. This was the result:
That is all from me this week. |
