BGP – Game Logo – Scrap Pirates

This week, among a few other things, I worked on the Logo to our project, Scrap Pirates. And so, without further ado, here it is!

Overall the logo is perhaps slightly darker than we originally intended to increase the readability when resized. Other than that however I am rather pleased with the result.

I should also point out that the vector base and work on the fonts silhouette was done by another member of the team, Jenny Grip, so well done to her as well!

Anyway, for the first draft we went a lot more with red and the blue, to represent the magnetism mechanic of the game, but a teacher pointed out that this immediately brought tha US to mind, so the colors could probably be reworked a bit. From looking around at logos a bit as well as pondering what would fit our game we settled on keeping the red and blue (but limited to one letter) and using an orange base, since it is a rather welcoming color as well as that it fits with our color scheme both in relation to warm metals and rust as well as one of our main characters (Jonsey) wearing a stylish orange overall.

originally we also went for the letters to appear depressed as if punched into a metal sheet. This effect however was generally misread, and could make adding details a bit illogical. So eventually we altered it so that the characters would look more extruding to allow for a different kind of wear as well as a couple of seams and rivets to be created. The extruding effect is also a lot more readable than the depressed one.

A couple of other things that were also taken into conscideration when making the logo were readability from a distance (or zoomed out) as well as in black and white. Here is a little test of what the logo looks like on white and black backgrounds, both in color as well as black and white.

As mentioned above the logo became a little bit darker than we thought it would from the beginning as we altered it to increase readability. This because the darker fill color in between the letters was originally lighter, which made it too close in value to the orange, and therefore would make it a bit hard to make out when zoomed out.

Another little thing that would increase the readability for backgrounds of different value was the addition of a smaller, lighter edge around this darker fill color. The darker fill color would make the logo stand out nicely on brighter backgrounds, but perhaps make it blend a bit too mcuh into darker ones. So to counter this a slim, lighter edge was added to give a bit of extra contrast on darker backgrounds as well.
