Green Warden: Week 9 – Iterating HUD
|
Last blog post for this project! Well, maybe I will make one after the final presentation to look back on the things that have happened and what I have learned. Anyway, this week I have started to run out of things to do. Almost all art assets are done or are currently being made by someone else on the team, so there was not a lot for me to chose from when picking tasks during the sprint planning meeting this Monday. One of the few things left to do was to redo the heads up display a bit and improve it based on the feedback we received during the Beta presentation. First off there was the health bar for the dryad. This is the version we used in the Beta presentation: However, it blended in too much with the background and it was not obvious that it was actually a health bar. So instead, I used the other life bar I made for the dryad, the pink one with flowers instead of leaves. I made this one a while ago because I was worried the green one would blend in too much with the background, and it turned out I was right. In order to make it stand out even more from the background I gave the base a pink border and gave the entire thing a black border as well, just in case. So this is what it looks like now: Hopefully that will work better in the game! The other thing I revamped was the shield icon. This is the original one: It does not look great. I made it pink because the original shield was a pink force field that surrounded the character. I wanted the icon to look both like a shield and a flower petal, but I think I failed a bit in that regard. However, at the time I was not able to make a new version. But here is the new icon I made this week! I used the shield my team mate made as a base and turned it into an icon. I gave the shield a glow similar to the glow around the dryad and the life tree. You can only use the shield ability sometimes, so there had to be something that indicated a cooldown. I made an animation where the icon goes from being grayed out to being fully colored and glowing, signaling that the shield ability is ready for use. |
