Animating a heavy armor
|
Animating a heavy armor This week I was stuck with animations. The most horrid thing I could imagine. Luckily I got away pretty easy and didn’t have to make everything from scratch. After having painted our powerups last week I realised that we now needed animations for one of them. The Suit of armor. We need our character to move after having put on the suit. After having put on the armor the player is slowed down by fifty percent. He is now walking in a heavy suit that he (at the moment) can’t take off. The armor provides the player with protection as well as having a score value. What I ended up doing with the armor after realising that I needed to do animations for it, was redrawing the armor so that it was same size as the character instead of just being massive. This way I didn’t need to make a brand new animation for it. Marcus in our group had already done the player animations for walking as well as idle animations, crouching etc… I could open up four different walking animations. Left, right, up and down. What I now did was to design a helmet that would fit the characters giant head. The result is something you might see in south park. I placed the helmet on top of the main character and could now focus on simply tracing my armor ontop of the already existing walking animations. Each animation consisted of ten frames. In the moment I am typing this I just started and can therefore not say exactly how long this will take and what problems I might come in contact with but so far it’s looking good. Furthermore to improve the presentation of the armor I have made a walking sound for the armor. The sound I was looking for was heavy armor pieces moving, and this could be achieved quit simply by banging big metal chains together. After looping this with some timing adjustments we have a decent waling sound for a heavy armor. The programmers are at this time trying to fit the armor into the game with mixed results. The armor is slowing the player down, but you cannot be killed while wearing it. The armor is unfortunately not yet visible either. We are aiming for a beta release with the armor as well as all of the other powerups. |
