Week 4

Week 4 of Spelutveckling – introduktion

Role: Lead artist.

Game: Day of the Piñata

Story:
In Day of the Piñata, the player takes control of a piñata possessed by a vengeful spirit awakened during the infamous Day of the Dead festival in rural Mexico. Meanwhile, the child of a prominent local celebrates his birthday by tying up piñatas all over the town and prepares to smash them for their tasty content.

Angry with the slaughter of papier-mâché animals over the centuries, the piñata goes on a rampage in the streets of the local village to set it’s brethren free.

It’s goal: to ruin the festival and avenge piñatas worldwide.

After being sick the entire last week, progress has been slow. I am responsible for the environment in the game. So far I have made a concept of how the environment and background will look like. having a cartoonish but still painted style. Doing a night scene, I am using a lot of blue and purple colors as base. The game starts outside a mexican village the moonlight will be the only source of light. But as the player moves into town, the color theme will change as the light sources will be coming from lanterns. The main challenge here for me is to make the shift from natural moon light to artificial light sources, while still maintaining the same style and feeling.

Also this week I have been working on the front page to or design document. Making it like a classic 80’s film poster, fitting all characters in one scene. Composing all characters and parts of the environment in one picture has taken some planning, in order for all of them to fit.

In the center is the little piñata with a bigger more evil looking piñata in the background. This illustrates the story and also parts of the game mechanics. Collecting candy makes the piñata more evil and powerful as it grows in size.

Being happy with the composition there has been a lot of details to be added. For example the face paintings on the children (which is a type of enemy), has taken a lot of time. At its current state I would say about 50 % of the painting is done. There is still a lot of details and chances to be made. I will continue working on this during the weekend. As for now, this half done painting will have to do for our design document which deadline is tomorrow at 13.00.
