BAT the Game – Week 2

Week 2 of the BAT Game Project

This week has been very efficent. I myself went into a drawing spree stage were I just wanted to get as much background assets as possible done for our project so that our programmers could start adding the visuals to the game prototypes.

Info about our game: 2D sidescrolling, flying, speedrun.
In order to create depth in our game I decided to create a parallax environment. This means that I will create different layers in the forground and in the background and the programmers will make them scroll in different speed. Objects in the forground will move fast and the further the objects are placed in the back the more slow will the scroll. This will create a feeling of depth.

In my Concept Art course I learned about thumbnails, how important and helpful they might be in a project. So I started to create different mood styles of the environment with different palette color combinations to show my team in order to get their oppinion about my early concepts.

Part 1
Since I am responsible artist for the Background assets I decided the first minutes of gameplay would be in the forest.
Color palette: dark and bright purple and blue | Possible Traps: The Owl

Part 2
The second part would be when you fly above the tree tops and the moon will appear mighty big in the sky.
Color palette: green, blue and darker blue | Possible Traps: The Hawk

Part 3
The third part would be back in the forest but now the color scheme will have changed to abit more foggy. Here the Owl trap will be the same but the player will have to listen to the sound of the owl in order to notice its hiding.

Part 4
The forth part will be when the player is close to the entrence of the cave. The entire forest is being lit up by the green, turqouise crystals at the entrence of the cave.
Color palette: turqouise and blue | Possible Traps: The Hawk and the Owl

Part 5
The fifth part is in the cave. This will also be the last part.
Color palette: grey, blue and turqouise | Possible Traps: Stalactites and Gayzers

Part 6
If I will have the time I am planning to create a boss battle level with lava environment.

Traps in BAT

Since our game is a speedrun it would be too easy to just fly past the environment and also repetitive and way too boring to play. That was why we decided to add some traps to the game in order to make it more challenging. The traps that exist in our plans right now is:

Animations

When I had had enough this week of drawing environment I figured it would be a good idea to create some animations to our game. Just having everything not moving would not have been visually appealing enough for the eyes of the players. I started with creating one of the Pickups in this game. I thought it would be easy to just animate in Photoshop but I was so wrong. After many attempts I was reasonably pleased with this result. I wanted the wings to look even more like they are buzzing in the air above the back of the fly. I might come back to this one later and clean it up abit. However maybe it does not matter since we are going to scale it down by around 50%.

Next I created this trunk with the “blinking, google eyed owl”. This background asset is supposed to be the warning for the player that she is now entering the territory of hostile owls trying to kill the player.

Owl movement: Idle

Last but not least I sat down to create the Gayzer animation. I decided to give it “Super Mario Advance” physics since drawing animated water falling realistically to the ground would have been a far too much complicated and time consuming project than I would ever had time with for this relatively short space shooter project.

Time is of the essence! 🙂
