Building a character

This week we were given an assignment where we was supposed to choose one of our 20 characters that we drew the first week on this course. This is the characters that I drew and had to choose from.

The one i choose was this character embedded below because I thought that the sketch had a mysterious feel about it and it also radiated a kind of energy.

Robotic being

My job now was to create a more solid character out of this sketch that was a bit more detailed and overall more finished than this sketch. The assignment had us do one pose where the character was supposed to have a relaxed pose. This should be shown in three different stages and the picture below is my result of this.

Three stages

I had to abandon the visor on my character because I had to show that I could draw a face in the assignment. I don’t know about how good this face got but it it atleast shows the characters face. I tried to make him look mysterious and give him the overall feeling of the first sketch but I don’t think I managed to do this. If I would continue to refine this character I would give him a visor again but maybe a visor that is possible to see through so that we still can see the characters face. I also noticed how damned hard it was to draw boots that actually looks like boots and not slippers.

I was also supposed to draw a turnaround of this character and beneath you can see the result of this.

Turnaround Håkan Pettersson

The reason for the character not having hands is that in the back-story to the character I made him a human in a robotic suit inspired by Robocop. But this character was purely developed for war and therefore I replaced his hands with cannons.
