Unity tweaks, workarounds and tricks

Week 2 of the Big Game Project is done and with it I’ve encountered more than enough of various quirky/unexpected behavior from Unity and community plugins. What I’ve learned from my endeavors I’ve decided to share. It mostly encompasses things which may not behave as one would imagine at first. I’m surprised that I didn’t encounter these while developing CoBots but I guess changing the workflow significantly enough (for the better) is the primary cause.

Project Clint Weekly Roundup – April 12-17

This weeks round-up post comes a bit early because it’s Easter and all what that means.
Sitting with UnityWhile not complementing previous courses, I’ve sat more and trying to learn myself the Unity game engine. I’m starting to get a hang of how the engine and the  scripting system and such is working, although this will probably be a constant process as the development goes along. I feel ready to start working for real next week.
Talking to teachersI’ve been talking to […]

Big Game Project Weekly Roundup: April 7-11

My first, real week of the Big Game Project is now finished. From now on, I  will blog at least once a week, and do some weekly roundup on what happened during the week.
April 7-9: Talking to my teachers about what to doI spent the first three days of this week talking to my teachers about what I should do during the course since I was the last man standing while every other Big Game Group was filled. In the […]

Announcing "Project Clint"

Since I was the last man among my class that was without a group after all groups were filled, I talked to my teachers about what to do. After listening to a few suggestions and having discussions about it, we arrived at the conclusion that I would work on a vertical slice/prototype about a certain part of the idea that I pitched to my teachers last week, and then make the full game once the third year starts.
So that’s why […]

Totemic

Last week the class got to divide itself into new groups for a new course to start making games for the Gotland Game Conference (GGC). Half of my old team is the same with the addition of one artist, one designer/artist and one coder. The theme of the GGC is unconventional controls and after completing “Terminal” we wanted to focus on keeping it simple and polishing it to perfection.
We started a few weeks before starting the course with brainstorming what […]

Preparing for year 3 already now.

Right now, the Big Game project course has started. Some groups are already well underway with their projects, others who lacks groups will pitch their game ideas tomorrow (Friday 4th April) and try and find the members they need.

I talked to two teachers at Campus Gotland, Håkan Mattsson and Adam Mayes, about the idea I had for big game project. And they really liked my idea. But the scope was to big for the time that is left on the […]

Finished

As mentioned in my last post I finished all the frames for the intro of “Terminal” Friday, and yesterday our Lead Programmer implemented them in our game. They slide in and out frame by frame, ending on a comic book page with them all gathered before perfectly timed with the music switch to the main menu, of wich he was very proud.
Here is how the finished page turned out.

As I have showed previously I […]

Friday's Work

I finished colouring my last frames for the intro of “Terminal” today, since I had all values done and a colour scheme to follow it went rather quickly. I managed to finish the one I started yesterday and the last three ones, now all that is left is figuring out how it should be presented.

Game dev, Suit’em up – Ingame cinematics

Me and Jonas have worked hard on player feedback this week since it is the one thing that is missing from our game. He worked with boss healthbar and feedback when getting hit.
Malin has worked with particle effects for even more feedback. We need to implement them next week.
I made two really crude in-game cinematics to enhance the player feedback when the avatar is killed and when teleporting. I havn’t made cinematics with C++ before and I didn’t bother making […]

Haunted Light 2014-03-20 Pickups and Crack(s)

This week the whole group has been focusing on what is mos important for the game. Per focuses on the AI, Calle on the Options and Credits and I have been working on the pick-ups in the game; The pickaxe and the matches.

I started with writing a PickaxeObject class and I did it mostly like the walls are created in the game. Both walls and pickaxe inherits their core code from game object. Which gives them basic knowledge such as […]
