3D Computer Graphics I: Week 6

During class this week we have been working on the concepts for our third assignment. Now we will be making characters, so they need a lot of back story and personalities to justify why they look the way they do. Of course, they also need a world to live in. Since this class is focused on 3D, we were given the freedom to either create a concept of our own or find something that already exists, be it from a fellow artist or the internet. Since I’m currently cramped with a lot of work, I chose to find inspiration from the web. Also, as a plot twist in class, we had to switch characters with other class mates. With one becoming attacked to ones own baby creation it was a slight heartbreak for many, but I think it’s good for us. To work on someone else’s concept simulates the industry better. So, here is my concept that my talented and hard working friend Camilla will be working on from now on. You can find her student blog here.

“Detective Bella”

Character turnaround borrowed from a talented artist named Alyssa Tallent.

My concept is about a 12 year old girl named Isabella, nicknamed Bella. She dreams of becoming the next big detective, solving all kinds of curious mysteries. In this blog post I will get more into details with the world she lives in. She lives in the suburbs of a fairly large, contemporary Scandinavian city. The people in her area are not poor, but they need to watch over their economy. The stores and restaurants are a mixture of locally owned, small businesses and larger, capitalized chains. The weather is mostly dark, wet and cold. The sun is a rare sight and almost becomes a myth during the long fall and winter period.

The People

The locals come from many different sorts of backgrounds. Some are recent immigrants from wholly different cultures, some have several generations stretching back surrounding a very small area around the city. There is big diversity and everyone is accepted. In terms of religion and beliefs there is a large variety here as well. Due to the cultural diversity there is of course also many different religions. Among the older population, Christianity is popular, but the dominant belief in society overall is of the agnostic kind. Even so, these people put value in traditions and holidays. Routines are important.

Most people work small, everyday hero type of jobs. Everything from mechanics, small business owners and store clerks to teachers and nurses. Many also commute into the city to general office jobs. Some might have had dreams of bigger types of careers before, maybe of the artistic kind, but many gave it up to gain stability for their families.

Due to the weather and their routine-filled lifestyles, the people are not of the excited and extroverted kind. There is a mellow tone to everything in this world. People are not exactly depressed, but they are not energetic and overly happy either. Life goes on and they enjoy the small things in their lives, like coffee and a cinnamon bun.

A Small Paragraph

It’s a cold and cloudy day in the suburbia. It snows from time to time but it does not stay on the ground – it just makes everything wet. People keep up contributing to society only as much as is necessary, in a melancholic way. Three shapes are being seen walk out of a small local bakery shop. It’s Bella and her friends, asking the owner about muffins that have mysteriously changed flavor from raspberry to strawberry. Bella’s eyes are glimmering with excitement as they hurry on to look for clues. Finding a new mystery to solve is always exciting! But they need to hurry looking for clues, because it will be time for dinner in an hour.
