Working in group.
|
Hello! During this past week of development, I have mainly continued to work on the level art for our game, with the hope of taking some of the work off of my graphics artists shoulders. However, given the fact that i have already dedicated two previous blogposts towards explaining the process of creating level assets in photoshop, i decided to write this post about something a little different. That thing being the importance of working together as a team. More specifically, having workshop-style work sessions, where everyone in the team sits and works together, even though they may currently be working on different things individually. This is something that I really have tried to insist on that we do over in team dragon, since i believe that it is beneficial for both the projects communication and efficiency. It also encourages teambuilding, and makes sure that everyone has the same vision. You can discuss issues and questions that arise immediatly. And if something would go wrong in the code for example, you have the whole team there to help fix it. An extremely important thing when working in development projects with limited time like this one, is that everyone has the same vision, and are working towards the same end goal. If not you may end up with really incoherant results, and risk being forced to spend precious time adressing issues, concerning things that should have been established months ago. The way i like to do this, is to book a study room in the schools library, at least as often as they are avaliable. This way, we get a private location with acces to internet and power outlets (and even some “fika” when neccesary). But most important of all, we can dit around a table and work together while having än active conversation. However, this does not always go without resistance from the team. Sometimes, one or a few team members prefer to work from home instead of in group. When this happens, there isnt really that much that me as a project manager can do other than insist that they show up. I wont force anyone, and after all, It would be really counterproductive to force someone down to school if they feel like they would get more done at home. After all, the results are the most important, not the process. Also, i prefer to work in group so that i can get a better overview of the project, however this may not be the case for an artist who just want to focus on what they are currently working in for example. The point that I am trying to make by explaining all of this, is that while attendance to these workshops are prefered, but not mandatory. After all, we are all adults and can decide by our selves under which surcomstances we best do our jobs. I am happy as long as everyone does their fair share of the work, and produce usable results. We do however i might add, have specific design meetings dedicated towards making important decisions about the project, that everyone needs to attend.
