Start of Concept Design Project!

We have revieved a task where we were divided up in groups of 6 and tasked with making a game concept from two key words given out at random. Our group recieved the words Jungle and Sponge.

Today was our first official meeting with the group. We had previously decided that for this meeting we were supposed to have thought out ideas for this game concept.  I had the concept From Sponge thought out. It took initial inspiration from From Dust but ended up like a mix between that, the old god-game Black & White, and some tycoon theme park style play thrown in for good measure. I will add a link to the document I wrote but be aware that is just nu first thoughts and by no means a final product. Also beware that at the time of writing it is partly in Swedish and partly in English, I will try to remember to rewright it in english but until then if you don’t know swedish it might be quite worthless.

In the end we decided against my idea because it would be much better displayed with 3D graphics and it felt like a very big project for just the 10 weeks of development time that we had to aim for when designing.

In the end we decided on a concept based on an orangutan wearing a jetpack that’s throwing various fruits on the zookeepers that are trying to catch you and clean you in order to bring you back to their zoo. to the monkey’s aid there would be an arsenal of different friut weapons including Banana boomerang, Coconut bombs and Pineapple rockets.

We divided all the 6 roles, Producer, Game Designer, Lead Code, Lead art, Lead Sound and QA among the group. I got the Lead Code role. This meant that I am responsible for all the mechanical solutions in the game and supposed to talk to the designers if I feel that they are over-scoping too much and that it will be too much to implement.

So my first task was to design a preliminary control scheme, which I have tried below, I’m not sure I’ve covered all the things that could be needed, but it’s easy to add when the need arise.

Controls:            Scheme 1
Movement: WASD/Piltangenterna
Fire: Space
Alternative Fire 1: X
Alternative Fire 2: C
Alternative Fire 3: V
Escape(Menu): Esc

Well that’s it for today!
