Burgers, fries & apples

During monday’s playtesting session, our game received a lot of feedback from all the playtesters which the team appreciates very much. One thing that confused some of the players was the first placeholder for the food. They did not know if it was something good or bad to swim into them because it could also have been some sort of projectile from one of the enemies. My main priority this week was to create new assets for the food drop, and that is what I am going to write about now!

The food sprite we have been using, until the other day, was the first concept sprite I made for the game, a simple, green flake. I am going to show you the first sprite and what it look like in the game.

As I mentioned before, some of the players found it difficult to know if ”the green falling things” are something that is good or bad, they were confused about the food aswell as the White pebbles (projectiles) the enemy is spitting. So, after our playtesting the group met and talked about the feedback we received during the day and agreed that we should either change the food or the pebble projectile, and for me it was obvious that we should change the food since that was the first concept sprite, which means it was an unpolished asset, basically a simple placeholder.

We wanted to change the aesthetics of the food to something that clearly communicate to the player that the things falling from the top of the screen are pieces of food. So our question was; what makes the player understand that it is food falling from the top and nothing else?

-Realistic pieces of food!

Since we have made a cartoony/unrealistic game, we could instead have some food made for humans, drop into the tank.

What you see above are the recreations of the food I have made that our coder has implemented in the game. Hopefully this time it will be better communicated to the player that he/she should pick it up, and not get confused about it. By having it this way it should be much easier for the player to separate the food from the projectiles.

I made them all in colors that does not blend into the background or the enemies too much, the player should be able to discern the food from Everything else on the screen.

This Picture is showing how the new food sprites are looking in the game.

I hope the group made a better decision with the food this time!
