Vines

I decided to make the image with three different layers of vines, so that one could mix and match to change the look depending on the situation it is supposed to be used in. To be able to vary the looks I decided to make the vines in the different layers in different thicknesses and different colours. I started by looking for good references, and as usual drew a bunch of sketches traditionally. Having found the looks that I wanted I proceeded to Photoshop where I drew the vines, each one in a layer of its own in an image double the size of the doorway it is supposed to fill. This is since it is much easier to draw detail in a larger image and then shrink it to the size you actually need than trying to pixel in all the details in a small sprite. During the drawing I moved the different layers up and down to make sure the vines would look good in any combination. I also made one layer in the image with yellow flowers and one with pink, which are to be combined with the vines for barriers that shall open/vanish/dissapear when the player approach them carrying an item of the same color as the flowers. Those layers are of course also loose so one can use them in the way that suits the situation, or not at all if the barrier should open for some other reason.

This time I have been working with vines. For our game we needed something to block off areas until the player has solved some kind of puzzle or found the right item. Since our environment is a cave we thougth vines would be a suitable obstacle, being something one could find in a cave and different enough from the rest of the environment to be clearly discernible, as opposed to e.g. a slab of rock which is also a perfect obstacle but not that obviously different from the rest of the environment.
