Quick update and thoughts

No, I haven’t forgotten about the blog. I’ve been supposed to write for some time now, but I didn’t get my thumb loose to actually post anything until now. There are a few things that have happened since last time, so here, have a quick update;

The shmup-project was finished and all of the groups pitched their game-designs in the beginning of this month. There were many interesting titles and ideas that were presented, which was nice to see. I’m proud of what we came up with in group five, and it feels great to have been working with the other members. Thank you all for the great work and the dedicated and enjoyable atmosphere C:

Now that the Game design introduction course is over the GAME-13 class has split in two – Programmers are now studying a programming course whilst the graphical artists are studying a 2D-graphics course. I’m a graphical artist, so I sit around sketching and drawing all the time. We’ve had a couple of model-drawing-lessons, which I personally appreciate very much. I think it’s a great way to learn to sketch, and the techniques that we’ve learnt have been very helpful. Every Friday there’s a deadline. The first week we designed thumbnails of characters for one of two game concepts. I drew my thumbnails rather quickly, but after about twenty small sketches my ideas begun to run dry. So I took a break, and when I got back to sketching I picked out the ten thumbs that I liked the most and completed ten new thumbs from scratch before sending in the assignment.

Here are a few of my thumbnails, based upon an idea called “Princess Bella and her Umbrella”

Last week we practiced perspective. I’ve had the luck to learn about different kinds of perspective and how to use them already in middle-school. I thought that everyone had done that, but apparently they hadn’t. I didn’t remember everything though, but it felt good to at least have heard about it before. Some of the things we were told were new to me as well, and very useful. I’m not particularly fond of drawing a bunch of lines with a ruler, and tire of it quickly, but I know and feel that it’s useful. One day perhaps I’ll have drawn and sketched it so much that I think it’s fun. As an assignment last week we had to use the techniques that we learnt to draw a plane and a car of some sort in the same picture, in two-point perspective. Even if I now, afterwards, see things that I could have done differently or changed, I’m rather happy with my result. I’ll take note of the things that I could have changed and use it the next time I’m doing something like this. Practice makes perfect.

Other than working with school-related stuff and some other things I’ve begun to think about if it would be possible to create a sort of survival horror game for children. Or, it probably is possible, so I’m rather pondering about how one would make such a game. What it could look like. I’ve searched around a little, and havn’t found anything survival horror-esque for children as of yet. Perhaps I’m just searching at the wrong places? Anyways, I’ve got a few thoughts about it, that I will be thinking about some more before I decide to present any actual idea here. Here, take a superquick and rather ugly sketch of one of my thoughts;
