This is a long overdue blog report on the progress of my Assignment 2 necklace.
In this post, I will showcase my final model, along with the UV and a WIP texture. I’ll follow up with another post showcasing the final set of textures.
Above is my final model for this necklace with a polycount of 2088 tris. With a somewhat flexible polycount limit of 1000 to 3000 tris, I tried to keep my modeling simple but still modeled out some surface details.
All of the pearls on my necklace, as well as the two separate pieces of thread, are separate elements in my model.
The pearls labeled 1, 2, 7, 9 and 10 are all simple spheres. For the pearls labeled 3, 5 and 8, I modeled out the lines that go around the sides of the pearls. For the pearls labeled 4 and 6, I tried to enhance the pattern on those pearls with some modeling. This wasn’t terribly successful, as I had to simplify the patterns immensely to keep a reasonable polycount. These pearls’ patterns ended up deviating immensely from the pattern on the object I referenced.
With the amount of pearls, and the details those pearls required, UVing my model took a while. I chopped up each of my pearls into as many UV pieces as I could while still being able to fit their patterns neatly onto those surfaces. Thankfully, all of my pearls had repeating patterns, so I could stack all identical pieces on top of each other and have them use the same piece of texture.
Above I colored in each pearl on both the model and UV to show what pieces went where on the model. I was a bit lenient with the sizes on my UVs, and resized the pieces according to how big their pearls were, and how much detail those pieces needed on their texture.
On my WIP texture, I drew out the basic shapes of the patterns on each of my pearls.
The style i chose for my necklace was cartoony Asterix and Obelix. In the Asterix and Obelix style, jewelry and metalwork is incredibly simplified down to only the most prominent details. I kept this in mind while drawing out my texture, and cut out many small details while keeping my coloring simple.
