Space Shooter Concept Challenge!

It is now the third week after the launch of our first “real” biggest project to date.

The assignment is to create a Space-Shooter concept for a game with the following restrictions:

Restrictions
– 2D (But you are free to decide perspective)
– No Gravity (Not requiring a gravity system)
– PC controls (Keyboard and/or mouse)
– 10 weeks (The scope of the production time of the concept should be 10 weeks)
– No network (Not requiring network)
– Single-player (Multiplayer or Co-Op can be optional, but the game must be playable for one
player first and foremost)
Requirements
– Theme (We received Suburbia and Underground)
– Minimum 1 type of projectiles
– Minimum 3 types of power ups
– High Score
– Scene (Static, auto scrolling, scrolling when player move, move between scenes)

We are all divided into small teams of 6 and we have 5 weeks to finish this assignment.

The very first thing we did was to assign roles to each other, as was recommended.

We had the following to choose from, the producer, lead art , coder, sound, designer and Q&A.

I decided to go with the role Lead Artist, because I feel that is something I need to practice since I have next to zero practical experience with graphics other than some basic 3D-knowledge, 2D is a completely untouched area as I am writing this.

We proceeded by brainstorming and playing around with a few ideas surrounding our two keywords we received. (Suburbia and Underground),

Eventually, what we ended up with, was something completely different from a Space Shooter the assignment is titled.

Here is a quickly mashed together Rip-Omatic for the concept:

And… A quick moodboard with general intended artstyle.
