My First Jam & Concept-project

Hello you all!

So, long time no see. As always.

The last couple of weeks we have done many minor things and two major things.

The major things:

  • My First Jam
  • Concept-project

So, My First Jam is basically an optional assignment all in our program can do. As a First year student this was my first time participating in a game jam. First year students, second year students and third years students make teams and in under 8 hours we are supposed to create a fully playable game. For this game jam we used Game Maker as our engine.

I got in a team where we were 4 first year students and 2 second year students. The theme for this particular was Addiction X. We started brainstorming. Came up with a lot of crazy ideas and it was much of laughter. But finally we came up with an idea we thought was fun. Our game was called Dealer wants his dope back, and it was a platform game where you, as the player, is jumping around inside a persons veins. The narrative (story) behind this is that the character you are playing is a drug dealer and after the buyer have taken the drugs the character becomes a really tiny man and get inside the buyers veins and get the drugs back.

I thought it was a funny game, a simple platformer, and I learned a lot. I felt I couldn’t do much so much to help the other two programmers I had in my team since I am really new to this. But I did what I could so I designed one level and I made the entire menu.

The other major assignment, Concept-project, is also a group assignment. This is the last, major, assignment for this course so it is of course a big one. We got placed in groups of 6 or 7 persons and we got randomly two words which we are supposed to create our game of, and this is going to be done in 5 weeks. Me and my team got Jungle and Sponge.
My first thought when I heard what words we got was “Oh, s*it! How is this going to go?”, but just after a few days (read: Few hours of thinking) I found out that the possibilities are unlimited. I just needed to research me around the words and find out what else there is about these words except for a simple washing-sponge and a green jungle.

My role in this project is the QA; (QA = Quality Assurance). What I do is exactly what QA means. In other cases, if we would create a playable computer game, my work would include a lot of testing the game in every aspect possible. I would test the functionality and all the technically. I would find out whats wrong and create a test plan and execute that. Test again so that the test plan gave me the right solution.

But in this project I am less testing, since the testing of the game will all of us do, and more read the papers and check the quality of it. Both me and the producer of the game is not working and creating the game in the same manners a programmer or an artist is, we do all the work around it.

After the project is done you will get a lot of pictures of the game! And I am going to find pictures of the Game Jam, so they will come up in the next post 🙂

See you all soon,
Alex
