3D Course – Assignment 2 (Where I am at the moment)

During the last week I managed to finish the base model of the table for Assignment 2.

During the weekend I began working on the UV mapping, but I did stumble on some trouble however since the model is made up of seperate objects.

I’m still a newbie at UV and this was something we didn’t talk or learn about in UV class, since we were doing crates that were one single object. I didn’t really know what to do, but decided to give it a try anyway.

This resulted in three different UV maps, where there’s one for the top of the table, one for the legs and the bottom pegs and one for the “frame” at the bottom. I actually got 4 different maps when I first started out (with the bottom pegs being one seperate), but I got a tip from a classmate that attaching an object to another (in this case the peg with the leg) makes it so that they both end up on the same UV map layout even if you detach the object later.

So at the moment this is how the table UV looks:

I’m not that happy at all with the leg having a seperate UV map and I’m thinking of trying to fix so that the bottom parts of the table (the legs, the pegs, the frame) are on the same UV map and then keep the map for the top of the table the same. It would have been great to have all parts on one map, but I ‘m wondering if it would end up being to “crowded” and making it too difficult to texture.

I can’t say that I’m completely sure (or sure at all) on how to solve this, or if it’s okay to do the attach/detach thing or if it’s something that will mess things up later…I do hope I’ll be able to fix it soon anyway so that I can hand it in on Sunday. When it comes for the creation of the actual texture, I’ll probably be able to use some of my reference photos, so hopefully it won’t be as difficult for me as last time with the crate (where I tried to paint the texture myself).

I’m very stressed out and exhausted at the moment so I’m not sure if this is enough for the blog post update on Assignment 2. I just felt that I needed to do this post now to show how far I’ve gotten and that I’m working on it.
