Everybody is a n00b.. jam

Last week I stood in front  of the whole class for the first time and spoke of my teams analyze of the games we had played together (Gloom, Kingdoms & Conspiracy X). I wasn’t alone on the stage, with me I had Mariam and Sebastian which were great support for me. Probably I wouldn’t had gone up on the stage alone because I’ve always thought that its embarrassing and I get extremely nervous and start to shake like an aspen leaf. But after the presentation it felt extremely good and that I had accomplished something, I also realized that it wasn’t THAT bad, it was actually pretty fun.

I also got to hear from a class member that he never noticed that I was nervous and thought I did a great job on the stage. More exactly he said that I was cool as a swimming pool and came with sensible comments to keep the discussion on track, hehe :)

That was in the beginning of the week, but when the weekend came closer so did the Alumni days and Game Jam (aka, Everybody is a noob jam)! During the Alumni days I heard speeches from awesome people within the game industry such as Teddy Sjöström from Pixel Ferrets, Daniel Gustafsson from Might and Delight, Kajfa Tam from Massive, my teacher Adam Mayes and some other great people. During the last day we had Game Jam which means that students from the first to third year get to make a game together within less than eight hours.

The deadline was 18:00 and the winners of best Innovation, Execution and most fun was announced. Unfortunately I didn’t belong to one of those groups who won but I had lots of fun making our game in a group of five members and a combination of first, second and third year students. The game we created was D.O.O.M (Death of oversized mushrooms) and the player had to kill mushrooms by throwing potions at them. The color of the potions were red, blue and yellow while the oversized mushrooms were in the colors green, orange and purple. So the player has to throw the right combination to kill the mushroom, for example: If the player throws one green and one blue potion then a purple mushroom is killed.

The idea was that when a mushroom is killed, then spores spread and new mushrooms start to grow until there are simply too many to kill. But that idea we had to scrap because there wasn’t simply enough time.

Except from many laughs, beer and free pizza I also gained more experience and learned new ways to animate in Photoshop CS6 from a third year student so for me it was a great success! :)
