Blog Report Assignment 2 Part 1

This is the object I chose from the museum. I chose the object because of the vain reason that I liked the way it looked. I enjoy symmetry and at first glance it looked very symmetric as opposed to some of the more damaged objects in the collection. It is also made of metal which is a very interesting material. I would like to be able to texture it in the shiny but not shiny way that old objects of metal looks.

I took a lot of pictures and I didn’t decide on this one until later that day. The problem however is that since I didn’t pick it at the museum I didn’t look at the note belonging to the object. I can’t answer the questions related to the object in this post because I don’t know much about it.

I do however know that it is some kind of box. I know that it is a religious object and that the religion in this case is Christianity.

For the visual style I would like to make it realistic but maybe a bit simplified. The game I have in my mind as inspiration is the Syberia series (Microïds) The object will probably be something you pick up or something that you look closely at and then maybe opens (it is some kind of box) and I imagine it to be in a point and click adventure game. I think I would like to emphasize the outgoing parts in the corners a bit more than they are in reality to make the object a bit more dramatic. I am flirting with the thought of ignoring the Jesus figure on the top but since it would have been an important part of it at the time it was made I guess it would be a bad idea.

Since it is a religious object there could be a bit sensitive… but then again what can go wrong with a Cristian cross at the top of a church tower shaped box? As I was thinking about this I stumbled upon this thought: Haven’t crucifixes lost some of its weight in todays culture? I mean the amount of cheap jewellery with crucifixes and ugly tattoos takes away my respect for the symbol… But I guess it is better to be safe than sorry so I will strive to be as respectful as possible. I will have to do some research when I’ve been back at the museum to see if I can find any possible problems.

The Jesus figure is one of the risks in this project, I am not ready for modelling humans yet so it will be interesting to see how I will tackle that problem. A way to minimize those risks could be removing him but I will have to discuss that with my teacher. Another risk is that it is so difficult to get good pictures at the object when it is in the display at the museum; I hope that I will be able to get a better picture next time.

This is my line drawing of my object. As soon as I have been to the museum I will make a better one and the texture and modeling pictures.
