Week 4 – The third enemy

Hey!

Another week has gone by and the Beta day is approaching… For the Beta, we were supposed to have all the challenges and the game itself was supposed to be overall feature complete, so I have been working on the third enemy which is also the last enemy the game is going to have.

It took a while to decide how the third enemy was going to look like because I wanted it to fit our game’s earth theme and maybe have some connection with Greek Mythology. Although the biggest problem about deciding on the enemy’s appearance was the fact that the projectile for this last enemy was supposed to be a beam. So that narrowed down quite a lot of options. The other enemies in our game are a tree and a giant rock so I was pondering upon different possibilities for the third one. I didn’t just want to make a new rock enemy which would look slightly different compared to the first one. I wanted some variation in the game so I ended up with the idea of having something to do with earth minerals for example, perhaps a crystal enemy? Crystal cyclops, so to speak… I came up with this combination because I thought the crystal could use it’s ”glow” as a projectile and it would come from it’s eye and also, cyclopes are everyday thing when it comes to Greek Mythology. I know this is kind of a far-fetched idea but this is the best I came up with!

As for the color of the enemy, I chose ”corrupted” yellowish green because people often associate it with something evil or bad. And also, because the color fit with the other enemies! When it comes to the looks, I wanted the enemy to have as many sharp edges as possible so everyone could really see that we are talking about a crystal, not just a green rock. I also wanted the eye to have a distinctly different color so it would be more noticeable and the beam wouldn’t come suddenly out of nowhere.

Everything else went smoothly except for the lighting part. Google turned out to be my best friend when it came to the final step where I was supposed to make the enemy ”sparkle” like a crystal. This I did by coloring all the lines with a lighter color so it would bring out the edges! However, I wanted to keep the legs and the lower part of the body a lot darker because it looked better that way! Well at least in my opinion…

Regarding the animation part, I don’t have a lot to say because I made an extremely plain running animation since I have to hurry a lot with the last tasks before Beta!
