Getting started
|
Hey world, as a part of my education at uppsala university, campus gotland i am to keep a blog running where i reflect over things i learn during the coming two years. I’m a second year student at the gamedesign and graphics program and so far i really enjoy it. When i first applied to this program i thought graphics and design were.. linked together more than they actually are. Ofcourse graphical art and gamedesign are linked together since both are important skills in order to make a game. Design for me has always been a graphical way of designing furniture, clothes etc. When i realized what it really was it surprised me a lot to be honest. That realization came to me when i had already applied and accepted a spot in my class. I’ve never been good with theoretical stuff, never seen myself as a smart person. Not when it comes to these things at least, first year i struggled hard and with the help of friends and hard work i managed to pass the course. Since design for me was all about writing long and boring reports i wasn’t to psyched in having the advanced game design course i must admit. I had heard from the previous second years that it was tough course with -a lot- of writing and analyzing. As the course began we chose the boardgames we were to play, two of them to be exact and a roleplaying game. I have to add that i have never been a fan of boardgames either, always had a need for visual feedback. As we played the first one i had a very very vague feeling boiling inside me.. I had fun, i have barely ever had fun with a board game before. Last night on earth it’s called, a zombiesurvival game where the majority of the players play a hero each and 1-2 players controls the zombies. It was fun, the deck of cards that were enabled to you through the search system made me just stand idle in a house as the zombies approached me. I had a dire need to explore that deck and see what kind of items and events cards were available. I guess i would fall under explorer in the Bartle system. Anyhow, where i was going towards is that i actually have started to enjoy boardgames and i never thought that analyzing them, talking about the different systems (barely knew what a system was before) has made me understand so much better what game design is all about. I have even started getting ideas for my own games. This was something that just didn’t happen before, when i tried earlier to sit down and come up with a good idea my mind just went blank, completely blank. I applied here mostly because of the graphics part though, painting is really my passion and i intend to upload some of my work here a long with reflections around that. A design idea has been sprouting to mind as well that i’m going to try to write down and hopefully make something good with. When i have something to tell about that more than loose ideas i probably will. Also i am planning to do a small project over a weekend where i am to play some different games claiming that i am in fact a female just to see how i will be treated. I am doing this mainly to get a clue on how girls gets treated online and if it’s worse/better genre wise. When i do this i will write a post about that. Other than that this will basically be a mirror of my mind for all of you to see and comment on if you so please. Until next time |
