Reflections of Alumni Day 1

Today was the start of a two day spree with lectures and a Game Jam. The first day consisted of three lectures:

  • Make Games, Now! – Myth of the Helpless Student – Lecturer: Teddy Sjöström from Pixel Ferrets.
  • Akademiskt skrivande – Lecturer: Jerker Gullbrand and Jakob Berglund from the University
  • Internship – Lecturer: Daniel Gustafsson from Might and Delight. Features from Adam Mayes and Steven Bachelder from the University.

Make Games, Now! – Myth of the Helpless Student was held by Teddy Sjöström who created (with some classmates) the game Dwarfs . He was invited to talk and inspire us (the students) to create games, and not just for assignments, but to improve your craft during your “free time”.

He also talked about Innovation vs. Execution in game creation and what we should be focusing on, while we’re in school. The common advice is for us to create the game we always wanted to since we do have time and money for it (Thank you, CSN). But he thought that we should focus on the execution (intent of selling them). Since we do get a lot of chances to be creative during school work, but not that many chances to polish them. He then moved on the common pitfalls which we should avoid. For example: Overscoping, team size, etc.

Akademiskt skrivande with Jerker and Jakob was tips and tricks for our final thesis. This was more meant for the 3rd year students since they are about to write theirs. But tips and tricks are always appreciated, even if they’re not relevant right now. They talked mostly about planning your writing before you start. Don’t just start writing without a complete theory/thesis.

Internship  was kicked off by Adam Mayes who did a quick introduction to Daniel. He said that Daniel was always creating good stuff during his time in the school, and you know if Adam says he’s good, he’ good. But before Daniel went up on stage, Steven Bachelder from the Convergent Media Lab took to the mic to talk a bit about what our opportunities were when it comes to internships. Which made me even more excited about our later years here. He showed some of the Universities over seas who we are collaborating with and what kind of projects they are currently conducting. One thing that really grabbed my attention was a virtual space created with the Oculous Rift and our Mo-Cap studio! So that you could, in real time, move around in a 3D space)

Then Daniel talked about his internship with Might and Delight and how he got it. A lot of the reason you would get an internship or a job afterwards are decided whether or not the company needs a new hire/intern and if you’ve done good. One of the biggest pointers he gave was to talk to the people recruiting in person, to give them a sense of who you are and what you want to do. Try to stick out from the rest.

This lecture, even though some of it wasn’t really relevant tome at this time , was really interestng. I do believe that being a bit forward and social is a good tip at all times. It can never hurt to show that you are passionate and willing to work.

After the lecture I came up to Daniel to ask him about “moving up” from QA. After my question we, and some other students started talking in general about his experience with the internship. He was then really kind and gave us Steam Keys for Might and Delight’s game Shelter! So showing your interest and motivation showed results instantly!

All and all this day was really interesting even though all of it wasn’t directed right to me at my current position.

A Game Jam is in store for us tomorrow! Unfortunatly there is also a lecture from Kajfa from Massive at the same time. But hopefully the’ll record it for later viewing.

Thank you to the guest lecturers and the organizers for day 1!
