Save the Best for Last

Or just the things that are not as important. This week I indulged myself in some graphical things that needed to be done to make the game  bit prettier.

One of the first things I did was the health-bar for the bosses. As of before I made the graphic for it, it was a simple red bar at top of the screen. I simply just made it a more flashy bar. I started with an black silhouette st playing around in black and white and having fun with it, trying some ideas I had and eventually settling for the one I liked most. I then took the colours from the players health-bar to match the colour scheme. I then had half my bar coloured and shaded now it was time to mirror the image and put it together. At this stage I got the idea of putting in some indicators at the point where the bar is at 3/4, 1/2, and 1/4 of full health. Just simple diamond shapes. It makes the health-bar more readable I think. I also got the idea of having it slowly deteriorating as you shoot away at the boss, so I made three different versions of the bar going from whole, to very damaged. And this is how it turned out.

Now to the second graphical doodad I did this week. The treasure chest.

I had some ideas at first about it being a chest looking like some sort of golden insect. Both me and others in the group had talked about it, and some weeks back I had made some sketches just for the hell of it. But I never really found a design I liked. So when I talked to Ludwig, our lead artist, at the start of this week it was decided that it would be more towards a steampunk version, and follow the same style as the players health-bar and the player character itself. My head started working with this idea and I at first wanted to do something crazy looking with loads of gears and pipes, just making it look insane but still be able to identify it as a chest since that is the sole reason for it existing. I eventually turned away from that, the reasoning behind that was that it had to be identified as a chest right away and not be mistaken for something else, also it won’t be all that big and some of the details wouldn’t be seen if I went too crazy with it. Sticking to the theme I made it as simple as I could but still looking somewhat steampunk-esque.
