Blog week 3 – Sound edit and even more asteroids
|
Blog week three is upon us! Our group has fought so hard these couple of weeks and as a team member I couldn’t be more proud of them. So what have I done this week? Well since the beta is getting closer it’s been hard for us four graphics-students to create new content, since it has to be implemented in time by our programmers. Therefore, we’ve been trying to come up with stuff to draw that is not very hard to put into the game. Since our game’s first playtesting, we’ve been wanting to put some static objects in our levels in order to give them more variation. We then came up with the idea of making ”unbreakable asteroids”. The game already has ”regular” asteroids that the player can destroy by shooting at them, so we thought that we could simply make similar asteroids but in a different color. We also decided to make one gigantic, hollow asteroid that the player has to navigate through. ![]() In the end I became in charge of the smaller unbreakable asteroids. It’s almost funny how much I’ve been working with asteroids during this project, but I don’t complain. First I searched for some references online that I could base my line art on. After that I moved on to coloring, which I had to discuss with Madeleine who’s been working on the gigantic asteroid. Since our regular asteroids had a light pastel color, we thought these would be darker to indicate that they were different. Finally, we decided that a grey color would indicate a hard material and would be visually appropriate. But visual feedback would not be enough for these asteroids. When the player shoots the unbreakable asteroids there needs to be some kind of audio feedback as well. I’ve been responsible for most of the sound in our game, and most of our sound have been found on ”Freesound.org”. There are thousands of sounds available and it’s very easy to navigate through to find what you’re looking for.
After finding a sound that I was happy with (I went with an ”error”-like sound), I edited it so the pitch and length of the sound turned out right. For this I used a program called ”Movie Studio Platinum” which is a movie editing software which also happens to have a number of audio editing tools.
With this the programmers have everything they need to implement it into our game. That’s all for this week. Ciao for now! -Malin Runsten Fredriksson, Group 9 |
