It is all there in the title. One of the bosses is depicted as a moth, and he royally kicked my butt.
The Version That Came Before
So, I was tasked with the creation of one of the bosses in our game. What we had decided on was that he would be a dictating moth, thinking he was far above the player in status, just sitting on his throne sending minion to fight the player. A fun concept, who knew it would set me back a good couple of days.
It was rather fun to take an insect that can be very annoying but generally cute looking, fuzzy, and colourful. Sketching up a concept I had to make him more slim and aggressive looking. And in the end I had these concepts out and was about what I was loosely going for.
So I immediately went on and made a pose for him with simple guide lines, I had thought of him as a sort of laid back don’t care sort of dictator, but after discussing with the group about what type of character he would be we all agreed that he would be more strict and rigid. So I gave him this pose:
I then moved on to the next step which was line art, colouring, and setting him up for animation. It is now that it starts to go wrong. I had some animations, that I were supposed to do, in my head, and knew approximately how they would look. So I rigged the character in a way so those could be executed. After all this I took it to our Lead Artist and got the approval to continue with animation. It was here that I first noticed how it was all wrong. Remember this, this game has a topdown view of the playfield and this boss is the final and central focus point in the final battle. As it was now, he looked as if he was laying on his back hoovering over the chair not actually sitting in it. And my rigging made him incredibly stiff looking, not giving him any life. I told the group what I thought and showed them how what I had done was plain stupid and a waste of my time, and in the end there were some agreeing nods and I went on to scrap what I had just done, so that was a few days worth of work down the drain. Well… at least I learned something.
The One That Stuck
But of course, it was not the end. I still kept to the concept I had and this time focused more on how it would look in game rather then how I saw him in my head. I also simplified(in my opinion) his forms so I could more easily animate him. So in the end I learned some valuable lessons and it worked out.
Simply simplify.
