Character concepts for Playground Panic
|
My work on this project so far have been mostly concept art for the player characters. I began to work on the female character first as the original game concept only had a female character. An insecure teenager that doesn’t like getting her hands dirty, and worries about keeping the kids clean in order to look good in front of the parents. http://shellson.deviantart.com/art/Playground-Panic-player-character1-433592593 This is what i ended up with. I spent a lot of time on the player characters for them to possibly be used as art in game menus and such. I also spent a lot of time on the sponge rifle design, I wanted it to look cool, and as if it could actually shoot sponges a respectable distance. It has a backpack full of compressed sponges that are belt fed to the rifle, and a nice see trough chamber to let the user see what type of sponge ammo is currently loaded. However the design might not be final as it looks rather mean and dangerous, perhaps to dangerous to clean kids with. On the other hand some water guns look pretty mean to. We also decided on adding a male character to the game so the player can choose gender. I wanted him to be a more playful and casual dude. He loves to get his hands dirty and enjoys playing with the kids. Who wouldn’t want to run around shooting sponges at kids? its just like a better version of a classic water gun. He arms himself with some hockey armor and enters the muddy battlefield with a smile on his face. http://shellson.deviantart.com/art/Playground-Panic-player-character2-433592683 This one still needs some minor touching up if it is to be used in the game menus, but overall he’s done. Here is a mockup screenshot of a pause menu were the art is displayed http://shellson.deviantart.com/art/Paus-menu-mockup-1080p-433599866 And here is the basic technique that i used to make the art. http://shellson.deviantart.com/art/Drawing-Steps-433599834 1. sketch 2. clean line 3. make a solid shape to create a clipping mask 4. add base color 5. add two layers, one for shadows and one for light, both layers in overlay mode 6. add two extra layers, one for extra highlights, and one for deeper shadows. And finally erase some of the clean line to make it look nicer. For this week I am currently working on a style guide, sprites and a mockup screenshot of some gameplay that you will see in the next blog post. |
